Book Review

Engaging, enlightening and a true story of forgiveness

Reading this book left me with so many mixed emotions, you wish some for yourself and others you don’t even wish on your enemy. However, I drew strength and courage from the author who through the storms was able to pull through life and arise victorious. Indeed this is a must read for everyone, the lessons in it cannot be over emphasized. It is a book on trauma, healing and forgiveness. We all have to find our roar and most importantly prevent childhood trauma in all ways we can.

“How people treat us is their karma; how we react is ours”

Such a powerful rendition of childhood pain of the deepest kind- a child’s supposed safety net turns out to be her worst nightmare.

‘Hush to roar’ got me enthralled in a mix of contrasting emotions; sometimes I cried, yet, the writer was able to project unbelievable strength and courage which actually helped me re-visit and finally overcome personal struggles with deep-seated past betrayals. This story showcases just how fickle the canal mind yet underscores the strenght and release that comes with forgiveness. It is a little girl’s desperate will to rise above limitations and finally ‘snatch’ the freedom to live!

Kudos to Toyin….surely looking forward to more life-impacting stories from her.

Overcoming childhood trauma

Hush to Roar is the most interesting book I read in recent times. The book is emotional as well as inspirational. Once you start you cant wait to flip to the next page. This is a true story of how childhood trauma can either strengthen or break an individual depending on the choices made (hard and difficult). It is a story of how forgiveness can set a victim on the path of recovery, inner healing which is guided by belief and spirituality. Though little Bas’s childhood was fun, full of life, aspirations, experiences and hope albeit circumvented to a new and totally different environment in Nigeria but never truncated, Toyin’s memoirs will help to heal all those who have suffered various forms of abuse especially younger people. A must read for everyone as it is a collective responsibility for all in ensuring we stand against the menace of physical and emotional abuse of anybody especially the most vulnerable in the society. This message needs to be spread for the sake of Humanity.

Hush to roar reads easy. The author has a brilliant writing style that keeps you engaged.

She educates the reader and shows you the reality of childhood trauma through the eyes of a child and further educates you on the experiences of the child.

Journeying with Toyin on her epoch story gives you so much to hope for as an adult, perhaps still struggling with the realities of childhood trauma. Hush-To-Roar is not just a book, it’s an ongoing conversation a lot of us would always want to be a part of.

With very vivid and colorful descriptions, Toyin takes one on a journey of different highs and lows, evoking powerful emotions in the reader all the way from start to finish. It shows how shifts in responsibility in the family circle can be so devastating as one can carry a burden for so long that others are supposed to bear…but thank Goodness for the grace to heal, to forgive and to share a story such as Hush to Roar with the world today….many will break free. Thank you Toyin
